-The Chicago Printmakers Collaborative held its first ever International Printmaking Competition this past summer 2011, and artists from 19 countries submitted new work, from which Curator Debora Wood (Mary &LeighBlockMuseum) chose 2 for residencies at the CPC workshop. The competition was unusual in that no fees were charged to artists to submit.

The top ten artists chosen from a highly competitive field included Peeter Allik (Estonia),

Liz Born (Chicago, IL), Yue Chen (Chicago, IL), Sanya Glisic (Chicago, IL), Kalina Kraleva (Bulgaria), Ashley Nason (DeKalb, IL), Darina Peeva (Bulgaria), Joseph Taylor (Evanston, IL), Cleo Wilkinson (Australia), and Angela Young (Tempe, AZ). Residencies were awarded to Peeter Allik and Sanya Glisic.

 

-Deborah Maris Lader‘s etching, “On Thin Ice”, received the Distinction Award (a cash prize) from the New York Society of Etcher’s 1st National Exhibition of Intaglio Prints in July 2011.

 

-Beauvais Lyons was appointed as a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he has taught printmaking since 1985. He is one of only 12 people holding this title, and the only Chancellor’s professor from the arts and humanities at UTK.

 

-Mary Mead has accepted a position as Visiting Assistant Professor in printmaking atColby-SawyerCollege inNew London,NH

 

-Conrad Ross & Andrew Rush,  “Perceptual Drawing, a Handbook for the Practitioner” by Conrad Ross, Emeritus Professor of Art at Auburn University with a  foreword by Andrew Rush, Director of The Drawing Studio of Tucson, Arizona has been published by The Edwin Mellen Press and is available in soft cover as a text  for class use at $25.

 

-Dan Welden will be an artist-in-residence during a 6 week stay in Guanlan Original Printmaking Base inChina. He will also be an artist-in-residence atCaliforniaLutheranUniversity in February 2012 for a month long residency.  During this he’ll conduct 3 workshops including thePalm SpringsMuseum,FallbrookCenter for the Arts and CLU, which will host an exhibition of the work.

 

-Cole Hoyer-Winfield has launched his kickstarter page for a woodcut graphic novel inBrazil.

Over a six month period Hoyer-Winfield will create a woodcut miniseries, to be distributed in original print form, zine, and online editions. He will also be performing live projector shows each month, similar to those he performed at the Full Moon Puppet Show in Minneapolis (here’s one of the performances on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My7LA-HL304 **skip the first 1:30 of the video, its all preparation**)

 

He has three artist residencies inSoutheast Brazilin historical printmaking studios where he will execute this work. You can find out more about the themes and processes at:

-Sigrid Wonsil will be a guest artist for the first two weeks of August inTallinnEstonia and will be printing in a studio near the OldCity.
