Call for Panelists for 2015 CAA Conference

June 5, 2014

Call for Panelists for 2015 CAA Conference

“Printmaking as Watering Hole”

Printmaking has always been a conduit for interdisciplinarity (even before that was a thing).  Ateliers, co-ops, contract print studios and university print shops have historically served a variety of artists and thinkers thus encouraging mutual exchange due to the inherent nature of the materials and the spirit of the printmaking studio.  This panel seeks to explore the most current examples of this reciprocity- that is the way in which printmaking operates as a contemporary “watering hole” for multiple species of artists, academicians and socially-engaged persons.  In addition, how this exchange manifests through interdisciplinary initiatives and projects, which transcend the medium and engage a broader audience and/or larger concerns.

For the 2015 CAA Conference, the SGCI liaison committee is seeking to represent multiple perspectives on the subject by drawing panelists from a variety of localities in the field.  These include individuals or groups who are engaged in larger cross-disciplinary efforts within colleges and universities as well as directors and members of private, public and community-based print studios, galleries or co-ops that coordinate/collaborate with other groups on the local, state or national level.  We also seek artists who employ printmaking as an instrument for collaborative and intermedia endeavors, which engage the public via performance, installation, graffiti, etc.

The deadline for proposals is May 29, 2014.  Please email the following to the panel chair as a Downloadable PDF.

  • A brief abstract (500 word max)
  • 5-10 images
  • Brief CV and Bio

Conference Update – PRINT CITY: Detroit 2014

January 10, 2014

PRINT CITY: Detroit 2014

The Mid America Print Council conference is rapidly taking shape!

The calls for panel/demo presentations and themed print portfolios are now open. Please find links to the calls on the Registration tab of the conference website.

We are happy to announce that the following three keynote speakers have been confirmed: artist Enrique Chagoya, artist Judy Pfaff, and Editor–‐in–‐Chief of Art in Print Susan Tallman.

Immediately following Chagoya’s address will be an opening reception for Goya/Chagoya in the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery on the campus of Wayne State University. The exhibition will feature a mini‐retrospective of Chagoya’s work, from etchings to lithographs to monotypes to codices to multiples. Included in the exhibition will be high–‐resolution printed images of the Francisco de Goya’s work that are in close proximity to Chagoya’s newer versions of the same theme.

To compliment the exhibition, the Detroit Institute of Art will open their print Study room to a limited number of conference attendees, allowing them to see the Goya originals (and more) up close! There will be a sign–‐up for this  event, which will include time slots for Thursday and Friday.

A meet-and‐greet bowling extravaganza at the historic Garden Bowl, an off‐campus tour to the famed Cranbrook Academy of Art, private viewings of original prints at the Detroit Institute of Arts, demonstrations at local letterpresses, and themed portfolios being displayed in local venues are only a few of the exciting events that have been planned!  The conference will be preceded by Detroit Design Festival and topped–‐off by Dlectricity, a nighttime, contemporary light festival with Installation work by national and international artists being projected on the historic Architecture of Midtown Detroit.

MAPC 2012 Conference – Call for Proposals, New Deadline: Feb. 12

January 21, 2012

Pressing Prints/Pressing Palms: The Entrepreneurial Printmaker
2012 Mid America Print Council Biennial Conference
Southeast Missouri State University
Cape Girardeau, Missouri

PROPOSALS DUE: February 12, 2012, midnight
Printmakers have an extensive and unique history of bringing innovation to the field of fine art through new technologies, inventive approaches, and original images. We have also long been an entrepreneurial force in creating small businesses that involve printmaking, such as collaborative print studios, print workshops, print publishers, galleries, letterpress shops, mobile presses, and more. In these spaces that bridge the private act of making art and the public act of running a business, printmakers create, generate, swap, exchange, persuade, transfer, barter, trade, invent, and negotiate. As printmakers we are inherently risk-takers, groundbreakers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.
MAPC 2012 will go back to its small college town roots, where printmakers will explore the innovative River Campus in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at Southeast Missouri State University, the only public institution in the state to have a separate arts campus. Overlooking the Mississippi River and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, River Campus will serve as the home base for the conference. Printmakers will also explore Old Town Cape on First Friday and, of course, become familiar with West Park Lanes during the time-honored MAPC Bowling Night.

Call for Proposals: Demonstrations/Print Events
