The MAPC Journal features articles on the contemporary and historical context of printmaking, works on/of paper, drawing and book arts; essays examining the critical theory related to these media; and reviews of exhibitions and publications.

Now taking submissions for the upcoming issue: Vol. 23, no. 1 + 2 (Spring/Summer 2015)

Theme:  The Global Print: practice, platform, and international springboard
In what way does the practice of printmaking cross borders, boundaries, and continents? What visual exchanges take place between printmakers from various countries, histories, and cultures? Is there a similarity or difference in aesthetic, content, or technical approach? How does an exhibition or residency experience abroad affect, change, or inform your printmaking practice? The Journal is seeking tales, stories, and insightful thoughts of your international printmaking experiences.

Details:
Length: 1500 – 2000 words for interviews and feature articles, 750 words for reviews of exhibitions and publications.
Image size: 300 dpi, 9 x 12 inches.
Sending Images: Send high-resolution images via Dropbox (preferred) or other online sharing services. Do not send them via email. You can also zip your images and text files together for sharing.

Include a brief biography (100 words) and color head shot (300 dpi, 4 x 5 inches).

Please consider participating in our 15th annual international postcard print exchange. Share the information with others.

The theme for this coming year is {hero[(in)e]}

Just to provide context, this year we received prints from 398 people, from 39 states in the United States and from 12 countries. These included 31 from Australia, 7 from France, 3 from Japan, 2 from South Korea, 1 from the UK, 1 from Denmark, 1 from the Netherlands, 1 from Spain, 1 from Germany, 1 from Belgium, and 1 from Austria. We hope you will join us this year.

REQUIREMENTS
I. Theme: {hero[(in)e]}

II. Any EDITIONABLE printmaking technique may be used. (woodcuts, litho, intaglio, photography, silkscreen,
digital prinmaking, etc) Please DO NOT send monoprints/monotypes.
Each of the prints sent must be identical to the others.

III. Size: 4” x 6” (They can be folded to this size)

IV. 13 identical prints should be sent individually to the address posted below. Each card must be stamped and will bear the markings of travel and the postal service. Do not send the cards together in one envelope.

About the Exhibition:

Shock Print is a national printmaking juried exhibition surveying contemporary printmaking in the United States. The exhibition will showcase both traditional and contemporary prints. The Wichita State University Printmaking Department in collaboration with the Ulrich Museum of Art hopes to build on the vibrant printmaking community in Wichita, Kansas, by presenting prints being made by both established and emerging artists.

About the Juror:

Juergen Strunck is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Dallas and is a practicing printmaker. Juergen has exhibited his work in more than 80 solo exhibitions and 500 invitational and juried exhibitions both in the United States and abroad. His work can be found in notable collections and institutions around the world including: Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD, Library of Congress, Washington, DC, Museo Nacional de Belas Artes, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY

Ulrich Museum of Art:

The Ulrich Museum of Art was established in 1974 with a mission to “expand human experience through encounters with the art of our time.” Over the past four decades the Ulrich has built a national reputation as a leader in innovative and engaging contemporary arts programming. Eligibility:

Artist 18 years of age or older presently residing in the United States are eligible to apply. Work must have been completed within the last two calendar years prior to entry into the contest.

A non-refundable $30.00 fee will be instituted at the time of entry. Entries will be accepted through SlideRoom at www.wsufinearts.slideroom.com

Files cannot be larger than 2 Megabits and should measure 800 pixels at it longest side. Entry fee will

allow the artist to submit images of three artworks for review.

Manhattan Graphics Center Benefit Nov. 5th

Manhattan Graphics Center will be having a benefit on Nov 5th. It’s during print week and takes place in the same building as IPCNY. It’s a great event – Every ticket holder goes home with a fine art print of their choosing. Over 100 prints on exhibition, a silent auction, and raffle (tickets 1 for $10, 3 for $20).

Manhattan Graphics Center will celebrate 28 years of bringing artists together, with a benefit and silent auction party on November 5th from 6­-9 pm at The Highline Loft Space at 506 West 26th Street. The event will benefit MGC, an exhibition space and print shop where artists as well as public school students can learn and practice fine art printmaking. MGC was founded in 1986 as a collaborative workshop in a SoHo loft space by a group of 20 printmakers who, with their own labor and ingenuity, were able to create and operate the studio, a tradition that continues in mid­town Manhattan to this day. Since the time of its opening, MGC has been run by volunteer artist members who staff and maintain the facility 7 days a week, year­ round.

MGC’s principal purpose has always been to provide an accessible printmaking studio in NYC with professional facilities at a reasonable cost, and an environment where artists can work and learn together. Offering classes in basic disciplines, shorter workshops in adjunct techniques, and hosting artists talks are all an integral part of the mission.

MGC’s studio includes a gallery space for exhibitions (group and solo), for an annual juried show, and for exchange shows with international artists. MGC reaches out to the broader community through its high school printmaking initiatives, both at the MGC studio and on site at public high schools.

Proceeds from the event will benefit MGC directly and feature original prints from over 100 different artists, including members and affiliates! All attendees will receive an original print of their choosing and have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and raffles.

Loyola University Chicago: Lecturer Studio Art: Drawing, Printmaking, and Painting

Loyola University Chicago is seeking applications for a full-time 3-year renewable, Lecturer of Studio Art in Drawing, Printmaking, and Painting for academic year 2015-2016. The position carries a 4/4 load ( each studio course at loyola has 4 contact hours.) The successful candidate must have expertise to maintain and develop a fledgling printmaking area with an emphasis on non-toxic processes. Minimum Qualifications include an MFA with a major emphasis in drawing/printmaking. A minimum of two years of college level teaching in the specialty area is required.   The position is advertised through Academic Keys and the College Art Association and submissions go through www.careers.luc.edu.

The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional artist in the area of Book Arts for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level beginning fall 2015.

This position will strengthen the well-established and highly ranked program in printmaking in the School of Art. The program includes instruction in the book arts and other forms of traditional processes while actively embracing alternative materials and methods that cross boundaries with other disciplines. The program has a strong history of collaboration that includes the atelier-like Print Research Facility, the Native American community based Map(ing) project, and the publishing imprint, Pyracantha Press. The seven well-equipped studios include one of the nation’s largest collections of metal type. The School of Art seeks candidates with expertise in the area of book arts and knowledge of the depth and range of book arts practices with a commitment to diversity, the capacity to work across artistic and academic disciplines and the ability to grow dynamic degree programs. The successful candidate is expected to pursue a research agenda related to their expertise in book arts and actively participate in the MFA and BFA degree programs in the school. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellence in teaching with the ability to formulate and instruct a variety of course offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including studio and seminar courses, courses for and including non-art majors, and mentor undergraduates and graduates. Additional responsibilities include studio maintenance, budgeting, oversight of safe studio practices, and service to the School of Art and curricular program.
Required Qualifications: Master of Fine Arts degree or equivalent terminal degree, strong evidence of research and professional activity in a book arts practice, and university teaching experience.

Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated potential to achieve national or international recognition in creative research and/or scholarship; evidence of ability to teach classes in additional areas that might include letterpress, relief printing, papermaking, digital techniques, collaborative printing, typography, bookbinding; experience in and/or collaboration on the publishing of limited edition books or prints; record of community outreach.

Open call for book inspired artwork under the theme Bookends – Anything in between.

Eligibility: This is an international call for artwork related to, comprised of or inspired by…books. The shows title, Bookends, says it all. We are looking for anything that relates to the medium. This can include traditional books, sculpture, 2-D, installation, text-based works etc. Must be 18yrs old to apply.
