The Wood Engravers’ Network Triennial Exhibition

September 11, 2014

The Wood Engravers’ Network Triennial Exhibition is the second juried exhibition sponsored by the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN). Joan Boudreau, Curator of the Graphic Arts Collection at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History, selected sixty engravings by fifty-one artists from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland and Belgium.

Wood engraving’s intimate scale, minute detail and fine textured grays are emblematic of this graphic medium. American artisans such as Timothy Cole, Lynd Ward, John DePol and Leonard Baskin exemplified the mastery and artistry of the medium in their times. WEN’s traveling exhibit connects the tradition of the medium with a contemporary context, continuing a celebration of the medium today.

Congratulations to all participating artists. It is trulFall MAPC show at Banshee Denver y a show to be proud of. From the Sue Oheme/Juror: “In choosing these images for the exhibition, my first choices were pieces that simply stood out to me in some way with a strong sense of design, color, technique, and/or content. A few knocked my socks off, figuratively speaking.  As there was no formal theme to follow or plug images into, I hoped that would open up the possibility for one to emerge. It seems that the only thread pulling these images together is the high level of overall quality. I was pleasantly surprised by the printmaking skill exhibited with many entries; it was not an easy decision.  Keep on printing.”
