James Butler, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Illinois State University, was selected by the Mid America Print Council as the 2012 Outstanding Printmaker. Butler has been an active practicing artist for over 40 years. He works thematically, focusing on subjects that are part of his environment, from interior still life work to landscape imagery, quite often finding beauty in the ordinary.

The River Campus Art Gallery at Southeast Missouri State University will showcase an accomplished collection of Butler’s work including paintings, drawings and a variety of printmaking techniques during the Pressing Prints/Pressing Palms: The Entrepreneurial Printmaker conference. His Artist’s Talk will take place on Thursday, November 1, from 5-6 pm, during the opening reception of his exhibition, from 4-7 pm.

- The ASP Comes to the Natural State

Artists from the Natural State announce their banding together as the Arkansas Society of Printmakers. (Little Rock, AR, January 11, 2012) The Arkansas Society of Printmakers are proud to announce their recent formation. Comprised of artists and supporters of the art form of printmaking from across the state, the group seeks to generate greater excitement and appreciation for printmaking as a unique art form in the state of Arkansas and beyond. The ASP is committed to maintaining the integrity and identity of printmaking among artists by sharing skills and knowledge through mentorship, professional critique, collaboration, camaraderie, exhibition, and portfolio exchange opportunities. With a successful inaugural group exhibition under their belts, the group is looking forward to an exciting 2012 season.

Yearly memberships are available at both the student ($30) and non-student level ($50). If interested in joining the Arkansas Society of Printmakers, please contact Diane Harper at pagespals@yahoo.com for more information. Business and community supporter memberships are available as well.

Pressing Prints/Pressing Palms: The Entrepreneurial Printmaker
2012 Mid America Print Council Biennial Conference
Southeast Missouri State University
Cape Girardeau, Missouri

PROPOSALS DUE: February 12, 2012, midnight
Printmakers have an extensive and unique history of bringing innovation to the field of fine art through new technologies, inventive approaches, and original images. We have also long been an entrepreneurial force in creating small businesses that involve printmaking, such as collaborative print studios, print workshops, print publishers, galleries, letterpress shops, mobile presses, and more. In these spaces that bridge the private act of making art and the public act of running a business, printmakers create, generate, swap, exchange, persuade, transfer, barter, trade, invent, and negotiate. As printmakers we are inherently risk-takers, groundbreakers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.
MAPC 2012 will go back to its small college town roots, where printmakers will explore the innovative River Campus in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at Southeast Missouri State University, the only public institution in the state to have a separate arts campus. Overlooking the Mississippi River and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, River Campus will serve as the home base for the conference. Printmakers will also explore Old Town Cape on First Friday and, of course, become familiar with West Park Lanes during the time-honored MAPC Bowling Night.

Requests for the following proposals are listed below:
Call for Participants: Special Panels
Call for Proposals: Portfolios
Call for Proposals: Exhibitions
Call for Proposals: Demonstrations/Print Events
Call for Proposals: Presentations
Deadline: February 12, 2012 at midght
Submit proposals as outlined below to: Kristin Powers Nowlin at kpnowlin@semo.edu

The current issue of The MAPC Journal is available on the MAPC website (http://www.midamericaprintcouncil.org/) and The Mailer will soon reach your mailboxes.

Contributors include Karina Cutler-Lake, Dean Dass, Johanna Drucker, Jennifer Garner, Karen Kunc, Josh MacPhee and Erik Waterkotte. The issue also highlights the work of Amze Emmons, Deborah Friedman, Curtis Mann, Nathan Meltz, Yoonmi Nam, Jenny Schmid, and the late E.C. Cunningham.

In addition to the PDFs and print-your-own options that are available on the MAPC website (http://www.midamericaprintcouncil.org/), you can buy printed, bound copies of The Journal from Magcloud (http://www.magcloud.com/user/mapc). Downloads that are compatible with your iPad or mobile device are free from Magcloud. MAPC does not receive proceeds from the sale of The Journal; rather this initiative is another means of reaching our membership and generating dialogue about printmaking, works on/of paper, drawing and book arts.

Thank you to the MAPC Board and Advisory Committee for their work on the current issue. Committee members are Janet Ballweg, Charles Beneke, Sarah Smelser and Connie Wolfe. A special thank you goes to outgoing advisor Anne Cassidy.

Looking ahead, the fall/winter 2012 issue will build momentum for the upcoming 2012 conference and commemorate the twentieth anniversary of MAPC’s founding. The submission deadline is 15 August 2012, and I encourage you to send topics, stories and suggestions for this special issue to lrgibbons@me.com. The MAPC Journal thrives on the active participation of its many supporters.

Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Art (3D) and Gallery Director needed at Mount Mercy University.

Mount Mercy University seeks a full time, tenure track Assistant Professor specializing in 3D and with the ability to manage a small campus gallery and teach foundations. Position begins August 2012 and is a 3/3 course load with an additional 3 credits serving as Gallery Director and 3 credits toward development of professional scholarship. Teaching responsibilities include sections of beginning through advanced ceramics and sculpture in Mount Mercy’s 3D emphasis area, and foundational courses such as art appreciation, drawing and basic design. Depending on interest/skills and program needs, the candidate has the opportunity to teach irregularly offered courses such as jewelry, new media (e.g. video, performance) or study abroad. Related responsibilities include maintenance of ceramics/sculpture facilities and equipment, student advising, participation in program and curricular development, and a commitment to teaching, service and creative scholarship. Required qualifications include an MFA in a 3D discipline, broad understanding of art theory and practice in traditional and contemporary modes to serve as the backbone for students’ conceptual development, technical knowledge for facilities/equipment maintenance (e.g. glaze and clay mixing, kiln firing [gas and raku], and traditional sculptural processes such as small-scale casting, as well as installation and site-specific work). Candidates should have an active exhibition record and will be expected to engage in professional scholarship in the visual arts.

The Gallery Directorship requires a candidate able to work with other Program faculty to create a strong exhibition schedule. Organizational ability is a requirement for supervising gallery student employees, installing/de-installing artwork, working with exhibit artists, and planning gallery receptions. The successful candidate will participate in student advising, community outreach to maintain student internships and service-learning opportunities, university committee service, and demonstrate a desire to help shape a strong and growing program. Successful candidates must also demonstrate a willingness to support Mount Mercy’s mission as a Catholic university providing student-focused education in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy. Mount Mercy University welcomes those of different faiths and is committed to excellence in education and community service. Screening of applications will begin January 15, 2012 and continue until the position is filled. Qualified candidates should send cover letter, CV, artist statement, 20 samples of personal work and 10-20 samples of student work (if available) with accompanying documentation inventory, relevant syllabi examples (if available), and contact information for three references.

Submissions should be emailed to: hr@mtmercy.edu <mailto:hr@mtmercy.edu> with the subject line, “Art Faculty.” Only application materials emailed to this address will be considered. Application materials submitted on paper will not be reviewed. Visit www.mtmercy.edu <http://www.mtmercy.edu/> for further information. Mount Mercy University is an equal opportunity employer and a smoke free environment.
